| | | | | | Hawley Retainer This is the most common upper retainer, consisting of a base plate that covers the palate and a wire across the incisor teeth that controls their position. Two cribs stabilize the retainer and clip around the molar teeth (see Left ). To insert this appliance, place the wire to the front of your teeth and then, with your thumbs, push gently up towards the back of your mouth until you hear it click into place. To remove your plate, feel up where your back teeth are with your fingers and pull down at the crib – remember not to pull on the front wire. We ask you to wear this type of retainer 24 hours a day for the first 9 months. After this you will wear it at night time only and, over the next 9 to 12 months, we will gradually cut down the wear of the retainer. You will be directed by your Orthodontist. To clean your retainer – after each meal brush with toothpaste and cold water. Do not use hot water as this will distort the retainer. | | | | Trutain Retainer In certain circumstances we may use a clear plastic overlay retainer that covers all of the teeth. This retainer is initially worn 24 hours a day for two weeks, then nightly until further notice. To clean, simply brush with toothpaste and cold water (never hot water). | | | Bonded Lingual Retainer The most common retainer used for bottom teeth is a thin wire which is cemented behind the canine teeth. This is called a Bonded Lingual Retainer (below left). To clean teeth with this wire in place, brush above and below the wire in a small circular motion. Use a dental floss threader (above at right) to guide the floss between the front of the teeth and under the wire for a thorough clean – especially if you are prone to calculus / tartar build-up. These floss threaders are purchased at chemists. This wire is usually left in place permanently to minimize any possible future tooth movement. | | | | | MORE ABOUT RETAINERS If your retainer is ever out of your mouth (which should only be when you are swimming or playing a contact sport) it should be placed in the retainer box that we have given you. Please make sure that you don’t put it in your pocket, or wrap it in a tissue, as it may get broken or thrown out. You also should make sure that you don’t leave it lying about if you have a dog as they find retainers very tasty. | | | EMERGENCIES If you lose or break your retainer or it becomes loose, please telephone out Receptionist to arrange the appropriate appointment. A fee will apply for broken or lost retainers. Now that you have your retainer, remember to wear it as we have instructed because, although your braces are off, retention is a most important part of your treatment. Now remember – if you don’t wear your retainers as directed, your teeth will move. This is outside our responsibility and may necessitate re-treatment and additional costs. Even though you may speak differently for a couple of days, it is essential that you wear your retainer as instructed. PLEASE BRING YOUR RETAINER TO EACH ORTHODONIC APPOINTMENT. | | | | | | | | | |
